UO Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact

At UO’s Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, Hoffman’s deep technology and research facility experience helps support scientific innovation to improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and beyond.

The 160,000 SF, $225 million world-class facilities at the University of Oregon will offer state-of-the-art research and computational spaces. The design of the mezzanines, offices, meetings rooms, and social spaces encourages collaboration between researchers from new fields at UO, such as bio-engineering, computational science, and immunology, with those established in the life, physical, and prevention sciences. The building structural system will include concrete and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) accents. The dynamic all-glass façade system will connect to a sky bridge that links the Knight Campus to the rest of campus. Over the next decade, it is estimated that the new principal Knight Campus researchers and their teams will add 750 new jobs and represent an estimated $80 million in annual statewide economic gains.

Every aspect of this high-risk construction activity required critical procurement and execution for each trade to be successful. Hoffman started planning eight months prior to construction, working with several trade partners including iron workers, glazers, framers, painters, sheet metal workers, and traffic control specialists. All work had to be performed on night shift and required shutdown of all six traffic lanes, as well as intense coordination with Lane Transit District to time all bus routes with critical crane activities and material deliveries.
