Building the Nation's First LEED Platinum Theater in a Challenging Historic Renovation

Portland Center Stage/Gerding Theater at the Armory

This complex renovation and upgrade gave new life to the old Portland Armory Building, constructed in 1889 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Serving as the new home to theater company Portland Center Stage, the 20,000 SF structure features a 599-seat “main stage” theater, plus a 200-seat “black box” theater serves as a second stage. A rehearsal hall provides space for workshops, lectures, and events, while additional spaces accommodate a costume shop, artists’ dressing rooms, administrative offices, and a ticket office. The lobby features interactive elements that tell the story of the building’s history and significant sustainable design elements. It represents the nation’s first LEED Platinum Theater.
