Replacing Portland’s Aging Water Infrastructure
Kelly Butte Reservoir
Hoffman built a new 25-million-gallon reinforced underground reservoir to replace the aging facility on Kelly Butte in east Portland. The new reservoir, designed to be out of sight under an oak tree covered hillside, complies with current seismic code and will provide adequate water to meet Portland’s needs for many generations.
In addition to the reservoir itself, the scope included new access roads, an overflow basin, and an intricate network of underground pipes, vaults, and valve structures. Hoffman managed the excavation of over 300,000 cubic yards of dirt and self-performed the project’s massive concrete scope, which included the reservoir’s 400-foot by 300-foot floor and roof, 252 supporting columns, and five walls (four sides, one divider wall).
