Spotlight on the Performing Arts at Reed College

Performing Arts Building

Hoffman’s extensive experience building theater and performance spaces was key to the success of this project for long-time client Reed College. The new structure brings together the College’s Dance, Theatre, and Music departments in a single building.

This 82,000 SF structure brings together the College’s Dance, Theatre, and Music departments in a single building. The building includes a 100-seat tiered music/choral room with 12 acoustically isolated music practice rooms, a studio theatre and black box theatre with loose seating to facilitate varied configurations, a dance studio that is brightly lit with two-story windows and skylights overhead, and a three-story atrium at the center that connects all the programs and offers bamboo amphitheater seating and numerous light bars for impromptu performances. Acoustical separation between the program spaces was a critical challenge, as was attaining the proper balance of sound generated within each space. In the music/choral space, the ceiling clouds, wood acoustical wall paneling, and even the thickness of the foam backing on the fixed seating was considered to ensure proper performance. Specialized “jacked” floors in both the music practice room and the dance studio allow students to fully utilize these rooms without disrupting any of the surrounding occupants. This project received Earth Advantage Commercial Pilot – Gold Certification.
