A Landmark Building Is Home to One of the Most Comprehensive Medical Centers for Children in the Nation

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

The Hoffman team overcame formidable challenges to deliver this state-of-the-art children’s hospital on a steep hillside in the middle of the OHSU campus. Our value engineering input helped achieve the visionary design within budget, while we rallied project partners to raise over $1 million in in-kind donations.

This landmark project was constructed on a steep hillside in the middle of a busy medical campus. The four-level, 250,000 SF horizontal structure, supported by large trusses, spans like a bridge over an existing eight-level garage. It clears a busy public street by 100 feet while one end of the building anchors in a hillside and the other end connects with a skybridge to an existing hospital. Hoffman contributed a key value engineering application by using shorter trusses for safer and more efficient erection. A mock-up of a typical patient room led to other value engineering ideas. The facility holds one of the most comprehensive medical service centers available for children.

Challenge

A budget shortfall threatened to compromise a visionary design.

Solution

Hoffman engineers came up the idea to use shorter trusses, which kept the project in budget and made for safer and more efficient erection.
