A Flexible and Sustainable New Military Facility in the Columbia Gorge

Fort Dalles Readiness Center

Hoffman overcame site constraints to build this 45,000 SF Readiness Center that maximizes views of the Columbia River Gorge. Despite a funding shortfall and program changes mid-project, we provided a Net Zero-ready building.

The Center provides space for administration, training, family welfare, recruitment, retention, and physical fitness for the Oregon Army National Guard. It also provides instructional space for students at the neighboring Columbia Gorge Community College. The College became a joint tenant at 75% design development, and Hoffman added their space and requirements with only a three-month schedule extension. Student amenities include a 10,000 SF lecture hall and 12 student welding labs in the industrial shop. Hoffman led the design-build team in meeting progressive sustainability goals; even with a funding shortfall mid-project, we provided a Net Zero-ready building with features including a solar array, a sod roof, and a heat-pump system capturing energy from geothermal wells.
