A New Academic Center Facilitates Student Collaboration and Showcases Student Achievements

UO John E. Jaqua Academic Center

The University of Oregon Jaqua Center is a new campus landmark, featuring study facilities for student athletes, classrooms, common areas, and a cafe all built to an uncommonly high level of quality.

The 40,000-SF Jaqua Center features a 114-seat auditorium, 35 tutor rooms with state-of-the-art technology, 25 faculty/advising offices, conference rooms, flexible classrooms, and a computer lab with 54 computers. Hoffman applied a stringent QA/QC plan to assure the correct installation of the many different finishes, sports graphics, and amenities that make this facility special. The building features a unique exterior double-wall skin system that had to be built to very tight tolerances. Custom sports graphics are integrated into many areas of the interior, and Hoffman and the design team worked closely with the trades doing the work to continually monitor work in the field and make certain every detail was built correctly. The unique design, a gleaming cube floating serenely on a surrounding reflecting pond, won an AIA/Portland honor Award.
