Complex Renovation in Active Wing Production Facility Required Creative Innovations

Boeing Wing Spar Assembly (Building 40‑02)

Hoffman performed a complex and extensive renovation to convert an existing 218,000 SF warehouse facility into a state-of-the-art production facility supporting the 777X wing assembly program. Seismic upgrades to the existing structure included installing a new mega-truss above the roof, which was designed to remove loading from the existing truss structure below so that intermediate support columns could be removed. Replacing existing mechanical systems equipment encompassed air condition units, chillers, boilers, door unit heaters, and Variable Air Volume units in office areas. Work included installing new reinforced slab-on-grade with ultra-flat performance requirements and a unique armor edge expansion control system. Working in an active manufacturing facility required close coordination so that the production support group working within the building was not impacted. To provide early access for owner vendors to begin equipment installation, Hoffman phased joint occupancy turnover of production areas within the building.
