A Ten‑Story Complex Adds 384 Units of Student Housing

Broadway Housing

Portland State University’s new 10-story Broadway Housing complex was built to relieve a critical shortage of on-campus student housing. It was completed through an innovative partnership between a private developer, Gerding Edlen Development, and the University. The 220,890 SF, mixed-use building includes classrooms, offices, retail, and 384 individual living units. Every unit includes a bedroom and study area, bathroom, large closet, and kitchenette. Retail space occupies the street level, while the second floor is designated for offices. The post-tensioned concrete building, which achieved LEED Silver, is topped with the city’s largest ecoroof. The roof has embedded sensors that students use to monitor the roof’s performance as part of PSU’s sustainable building curriculum.
