Martin Stadium Renovation Offers Improved Amenities for Fans, Players, and Press

WSU Martin Stadium

Enhancements to WSU’s football stadium included premium seating and the addition of a flexible and functional press box, equipment storage, and coaching rooms. Hoffman’s minimum impact plan kept campus life undisturbed. This project was expedited to complete in 10 months between football seasons and opened on game day.

Hoffman delivered this major renovation in time for the Cougars’ 2012 football season, despite logistical challenges such as minimal access and load restrictions. The project enhanced premium seating and added a flexible and functional press box, equipment storage, and coaching rooms. The new press box accommodates media, television, radio and stadium operations appropriate for Pac-12 league competition.

Challenge

Protecting pedestrians during construction was a top challenge on this project with site access restrictions and constant campus activity. On the Pullman campus, student traffic increases substantially for 15 minutes at the top of every hour.

Solution

While building Martin Stadium, we hired two spotters that diverted traffic away from construction activities, and engaged an intern from WSU’s police department to control traffic. Our bid document specifications prohibited deliveries and unloading during class changes. Hard barricades and an innovative protective walkway also kept students/staff/public away from construction activities. We also worked with WSU to plan for campus activities. We scheduled deliveries around Spring Fest, which closed a road in front of our entry-way.

Project Story

Protecting Student Activities with Careful Planning

Despite the project’s fast-track schedule, Hoffman’s minimum impact plan kept campus life undisturbed. For instance, truck routes were planned to avoid the heavily congested south side of campus along Stadium Way. This helped avoid campus dorm and student activities, mitigating a number of safety concerns. Prior to the delivery of hoisting equipment, we prepared a traffic control plan for road closures at least a week in advance. Working closely with the University’s project team, Hoffman’s proactive planning kept construction running smoothly and safely.
