A Multi-Faceted Education Project on the Rugged Oregon Coast

Southeast Hills Campus

In the southeast hills of Seaside, Oregon, located safely above the tsunami inundation zone, Hoffman renovated and expanded the seismically vulnerable Pacific Ridge Elementary School while also building a new combined Seaside Middle School and High School on the same campus.

The new 140,000 SF building is designed to serve as a tsunami evacuation shelter for the City and surrounding area. The team contended with 400 feet of grade change, ancient landslides, wetlands, a protected salmon habitat, and forested land on three of its sides. The team worked during the summer months to avoid impacting two salmon streams and to bypass harsh coastal winter weather. The project required logging 80 acres that produced a parking lot full of more than five stories of bark chips.
