Blending New Housing into the Fabric of Campus
The Grove Student Housing
At Reed College, Hoffman built four student housing units in four different styles, blending them in with existing structures at the school. The four dorm units total 40,000 square feet. Each has different finishes and detail, and is modeled after some of the existing buildings on campus to fit into the fabric of the campus environment. The four buildings comprising ‘The Grove’ are named Bidwell, Aspen, Sitka, and Sequoia. The diverse design created a challenge to coordinate all of the different elements; there are 400 windows in the project comprising 300 different window types, and Hoffman made sure everything was built and installed with flawless QA/QC. The project incorporates a storm water swale to handle runoff and has received LEED Silver. In addition, Hoffman and Reed conducted extensive community outreach to ensure the project was welcomed by the campus neighbors.
